During your next presentation, are you planning to “wing” it, not have any structure at all, because you want to be “free”?
Or, are you afraid that you’ll draw a blank and forget what you wanted to say, so you plan to script every word?
If you’re employing either of these approaches, here’s why you might consider another way:
Disadvantages of being a Scripter:
When you’re speaking from a script, you just don’t feel the audience. Your engagement is usually a lot lower, and it’s easy to get disconnected. There’s no room for magic, or for Source to step in and speak through you. And if you get lost, you get really lost.
The scripting style just doesn’t fit for most heart-centered entrepreneurs, who want to be themselves, be connected to the room, have fun and feel good, all while selling a ton.
Structure your talk, don’t script it and don’t wing it!
Disadvantages of being a Winger:
The other approach that people take is to wing it. This method is popular with former 9-to-5ers, who may rebel against any structure, as well as spiritual people, who figure they’ll stand up there, connect with the audience and know what to say. The problem is, you can end up in some really bad corners that don’t make your point.
For instance, I once invited a very high-level, small group of people to my house to have a spiritual leader introduce us to some of his practices. We were all very excited, and were seriously considering having him do a weekly class for us.
Unfortunately, he chose to wing it. And we ended up talking about some things that were very offensive to people in the room, and, by the end, most had decided that they were not interested at all. And it was really sad, because we were pretty much pre-sold, but, because he didn’t have a structure to follow for his presentation so that he would be sure to cover those things that we most needed to know in order to make a decision, the night was, frankly, a disaster.
Advantages of Using a Structure:
The lesson is, if you really want to make your point, you have to know what your point is, and then have a structured way to get there, while still sounding completely authentic.
Our Speak-to-Sell formula strikes that balance. It’s a structure, a plug-in formula, not a script. And its point is to have people take action, step up and say “YES” to taking a next action that supports a particular transformation they want to have.
With the structure doing the selling, you wingers really can have all the freedom that you want; plus, the bones of the formula will remind you scripters of your main points, so you won’t draw a blank, and you’ll feel great about the authentic way you shared your teachings.
